INSIGHT: Could Elections Add Value?

Peter Nicholson

Buying More Than Votes
The trend is only up. Our votes are getting increasingly expensive. What would a “sustainable” election look like? Dominated by economics, our campaign system is out of whack. Curbing political financing requires a revised approach, one focused more on redirecting outputs than limiting inputs. Instead of attempting to curb political donations, let’s restrict how they can be spent; less advertising rhetoric, more innovative community social investment. And to insure impact, let’s impose a significant tax on campaign expenditures, the funds from which would be dedicated to creating real environmental and social value, like implementing a world class voting system, or improving the infrastructure of our state and national parks, or eradicating illiteracy. Instead of waking up after election day, with nothing more to show for the many months and hundreds of millions of dollars than dread of the new cycle just around the corner, we could take comfort in knowing that no matter which party won, the process has created some common good.
