INSIGHT: Where the Pathway Ends?

Peter Nicholson

Island Diaries 2: Enraptured
We are here for them. My two fellow travelers and I have become well known on this small Filipino island, particularly among the 8-13 year-old crowd. It started one morning when I was doing yoga on the beach, and a small group of them came up, stared at this strange intruder, and then begin imitating me. When we introduced them to frisbee, our celebrity was secured. They now call out our names, ”Max! Jenny! Peter!" the second any one of them sees us, which happens frequently on a small, 13 acre island. The future we are here to consider is theirs, of course, looking at issues of water, energy, waste and the power of knowing English. One time, they surrounded me as I journaled on the front porch of our guest house, and just gazed at my pen crafting words that must have looked as inaccessible as their language looks to me. They’ve shared their unbounded curiosity, enthusiasm, and playfulness with us, easily transcending any language divide. They shout “pass!” to encourage us to throw the frisbee to them. Generous, humble, proud and, in our terms, economically poor, they lead barrier-less lives, easily navigating water, sand, land; indoor, and outdoors; foreigner and native; a geographically small world and yet, admirably, one without end. Pass!
