INSIGHT: Doing It Anyway?

Disentangling Fear and Possibility
“What are you excited about?” Recently faced with this question about my work, I didn’t immediately know how to respond. Foresight's project roster includes a diversity of challenges that both employ our expertise and inspire us to keep learning. Yet what most enthuses me is what we could be doing, the untapped potentials. Design exercises the capacity to not only create, but to envision. Inventing an airplane first requires having the dream to fly. I’m energized by surveying a new edge of potential, asking, “What could be?,” and strategizing about how to bring that into existence. With the more projects I complete, however, the process doesn't become easier. Rather, I’m more aware of the risks and unforeseen challenges. Ambition and trepidation can be interlinked. And while the former fuels my psyche, the latter can keep it in check, especially as I acquire more experience. Which is why the question gave me pause: What I’m most excited about also intimidates me. As I grow increasingly dissatisfied with less robust solutions, the trick, of course, is to not let that internal resistance matter.
