INSIGHT: What If Experiences Changed Us?

Island Diary 4: Quilting Progress
Everything looks different from here. I haven’t turned on my smartphone in two weeks. Any urgency I felt to keep up with the latest apps has evaporated. All technological innovation isn’t necessarily progress, despite what I have come to believe. What is needed here isn’t a faster processor or improved software features. It has been refreshing to inhabit a place whose top priority isn’t feeding the invisible, insatiable, “economy.” Which isn’t to say there aren’t serious needs. This experience has made me more aware of to what we are taught to aspire. For many here, their ambition is the completion of the next quilt, a tradition that was imported, and embraced, and now flourishes with its own unique twists. Walking through the village one afternoon, I came across a man stitching together a vibrant, powerfully contrasting design. The boldly colorful fabric interjected a powerful counterpoint to the pervasive earth tones of the surrounding ground and houses. An older man stood next to me and wordlessly gestured to the sky, and then to the quilter, and then to the quilt, and I got it. This is progress. This is God.
