INSIGHT: The Nature of the Game?

Peter Nicholson

Frustration and Its Antidotes
Last week’s essay was prescient. By Friday, I had encountered enough frustrations to be completely flummoxed. Barriers energize me, rather than exhaust. The challenge isn’t to find a way to rest, but to let go, and calm down. There is only so much one can do to influence factors that are ultimately outside of our immediate control; knowing when you’ve exhausted the possibilities is key. I tend to work with a strong vision of the success we’re trying to achieve. The emotional impact of encountering unexpected barriers to its fulfillment can be overpowering. The incomparable singer Lisa Fischer helped me recover. Beauty and control are powerful antidotes to my mental log jams. Ms. Fischer’s concert demonstrated mind-blowing, masterful command of a substantial talent. Something began to evolve and lift me out of my psychological eddy. The nature of the sustainability projects on which I work isn’t going to change. We’re only at the beginning of the shift. A significant part of me enjoys it. That said, it’s important to mediate the emotional affect with outlets, whether personal hobbies or powerful cultural events, that restore optimism and resilience, like one of Ms. Fischer's exquisitely delivered, soaring harmonies.
