Thinking in Experiences
Events have changed me. It’s an obvious yet important observation to keep in mind as I design the curriculum for the two sustainability-related courses I’ll be teaching this summer to high school students from around the country. When I was 14, I remember returning from an eight-week backpacking and canoeing trip in Alaska with a shifted vision. That and subsequent trips taught me important lessons that inform me to this day. The most powerful opportunity I can provide my students is the chance to deepen their perspective on the world and themselves. I’m less interested in conveying specific information than crafting a series of experiences around material that will engage them on multiple levels. Education is one of the most obvious and powerful self-perpetuating interventions to sustainability-related challenges. While the kids may see me (hopefully) as an engaging teacher, I see them as promising agents of positive change. The trick, of course, is to convey to them in a relatively short time, and in a fun manner, everything that might be possible.
