Holding on to the vision reveals the path, and there’s no need to judge the vision by whether the path is apparent.
Donella Meadows (1994)
I’m bracing myself. For the next two days I’m attending a conference on the economic implications of climate change. My enthusiasm for such gatherings has waned. There is a profound difference between espousing and holding a vision. Too often sustainability events are dominated by professional thinkers more concerned with the former. Which is fine, and even important. We need to be informed and jarred. I’m just more drawn to those lit up by trying to discern the path for their innovation. Many of those people, however, don’t have the time, resources, or inclination to attend such thought festivals. That said, I’m trying to remain optimistic about the possibility of a serendipitous meeting with a few like-minded attendees whose possession of a glimpse of a more vibrant future has, like mine, brought us here.
