INSIGHT: After the Thrill is Gone?

Peter Nicholson

Managing The Long Haul
Starting is easy, fun, thrilling. The more difficult part begins the moment the novelty dissipates. I’d rather avoid it. Given my way, I’d be starting something new everyday, and handing it off after the first adrenaline jolt subsides. The enterprise a team of students and I began working on several weeks ago has lost its luster. We’ve come to know too much. Over the last several years, I’ve had to learn endurance, focus, and how to derive motivation from a different place than that initial charge. The pursuit of greater sustainability is a long-haul proposition that requires embracing ways to persevere, like celebrating shorter-term accomplishments, and finding satisfaction more in the process than achieving the goal. Success in this field requires attaching my ambitions to the right horizon. Wired as an entrepreneur, I will always be drawn to the start. But constant new beginnings are an easy, short-term high. A deeper, longer-term satisfaction is only possible by ignoring the Sirens' songs and sailing past into different waters. Someone tie me to the mast!
