Topic
Greening Your Home
The products we buy, the food we eat, and even the homes in which we live have far-reaching implications for our family's health, safety, and wellness- but how do we reconcile the foreboding headlines with our modern lives?

Join us for an informed and engaged discussion on avoiding these eco-pitfalls in our daily lives between some of Evanston's experts in sustainability homes, gardens, and products. Learn about sustainability initiatives that you can implement within your immediate environment, and learn new techniques to foster a more fulfilling home for your family and the environment.

Confirmed Participants

Marny Turvill, Owner
Healthy Green Goods
This store carries non-toxic, and truly safe products for the home - from organic mattresses and sheets to children's clothing and toys. Dr. Turvill practiced pediatric medicine for 16 years before opening Healthy Green Goods. The combination of her medical training and her personal experience makes Dr. Turvill very knowledgeable about the effects of toxic ingredients in home products. She and her staff consult with individuals on how to detox their home to make it healthier for their personal well-being and the planet.

Kurt Mitenbuler
, Independent Building Inspector
Kurt Mitenbuler & Assoc. Inc.
Since 1988, Kurt has inspected over 8000 buildings in the Chicago Metro area. Kurt built energy efficient housing during the "first energy crisis" of the late 70's and provides observations on the current green movement and it's approach to energy efficiency. His solutions are unglamorous (in other words, non "eco-mansion" related), but hugely successful in reducing energy consumption in homes. He will be talking about practical, cost effective ways to cut energy consumption by focusing on where the heat comes in and out, at the building envelope.

Kord Staley, Master Gardener
The Organic Gardener
The Organic Gardener, Ltd. (TOG) helps families grow organic vegetable gardens. They offer a full line of services, including design, installation, maintenance, teaching and harvesting. Their specialty is working alongside parents and kids and they welcome participation in whatever parts of the process interest them. Master gardener Kord Staley is passionate about educating people on everything having to do with organic gardening, and often works with schools and community organizations. He will talk about the process of organic gardening from composting to harvest.
