Celebrating the summer, this month's Green Drinks will be held at the Wicker Park home/backyard of Kevin Pierce, AIA, Principal at Farr Associates.

Shortly before dusk (c. 8pm), Kevin will give a short presentation on recycling and urban agriculture intiatives in the city, focusing on the Resource Center. We will then screen two short waste/recycling documentary: Gone Tomorrow: The Hidden Life of Garbage and Exporting Harm: The High-Tech Trashing of Asia.

    Toni Bark
    Physician and environmentalist Toni Bark is founder of Plan-it Green in Evanston, IL, a store selling a variety of home products which are non-toxic, non-polluting, and manufactured using less energy and with the lowest environmental impact.

    Robert Kravitz
    Robert is an associate at The Ashkin Group, which specializes in green cleaning systems. The owner of the group, Steve Ashkin once worked for Seventh Generation, which makes consumer cleaners. Robert works in Chicago, and has participated in a pilot project, using green cleaners in Chicago Public Schools, which may find its way into schools nationwide.

    Andy Pace
    Andy is the owner of Safe Building Solutions near Milwaukee, which sells green, non-toxic building materials, such as low-formaldehyde bamboo plywood, low-voc paints and coatings, and more. He regularly speaks at conferences for homebuilding, and says demand for his products brings him to the Chicago area several times a week these days.

    7–8pm there will be a panel discussion on Environmental Justice: Not in Our Backyard. Panelists include:

    Cheryl Johnson
    Executive Director of People for Community Recovery, a community organization that aims to address environmental and health concerns in Altgeld Gardens, a South-side public housing project situated in a "toxic doughnut" -- surrounded by 50 landfills, 250 underground storage tanks and one of the county's largest sludge beds. Cheryl's mother, Hazel Johnson, started the organization in 1978 when she learned that the neighborhood suffered from disproportionately high rates of cancer, asthma and bronchitis.

    Keith Harley
    Director of the Chicago Environmental Law Clinic, a collaboration between the Chicago Legal Clinic and the Chicago-Kent College of Law that provides legal education and advocacy services to people confronting urban environmental problems in the Chicago area. The clinic receives between 50 and 125 requests per year, and has worked on cases involving soil contamination in public housing, contaminated school sites, brownfield site mitigation, and numerous other local environmental injustices.

    7–8pm there will be a panel discussion on Overlooked Labor Issues and Their Relation to Corporate Social Responsibility. Panelists include:

    Greg Petersen
    Operations Director/Director of Venture Development for Planet Access Company/Search Development Center, Greg initially became involved in sustainability issues in 1998 working for the City of Seattle. Planet Access Company is a social venture enterprise providing training and paid work opportunities for adults with developmental disabilities as part of a third party logistics service operation. It was started by Search Developmental Center, a not-for-profit organization that provides services to adults with  developmental disabilities and their families throughout the Chicagoland area.

    Rebekah Levin
    Rebekah Levin is the Executive Director of the Center for Impact Research. Ms. Levin is the author of articles concerning research and evaluation, welfare reform, and domestic violence. She serves as director of the Sweatshop Project, which documented the extent and severity of sweatshop working conditions in the Chicago Metropolitan area, and led to the establishment of the Sweatshop Task Force, the first integrated effort by the U.S. and State government agencies working collaboratively with community-based organizations to identify and eliminate sweatshop worksites.
