For our first Green Drinks-Movie Night we'll be viewing The End of Suburbia: Oil Depletion and the Collapse of the American Dream (2004; 78 minutes).

Since World War II North Americans have invested much of their newfound wealth in suburbia. It has promised a sense of space, affordability, family life and upward mobility. As the population of suburban sprawl has exploded in the past 50 years, so too has the suburban way of life become embedded in the American consciousness. Suburbia, and all it promises, has become the American Dream.

But as we enter the 21st century, serious questions are beginning to emerge about the sustainability of this way of life. With brutal honesty and a touch of irony, The End of Suburbia explores the American Way of Life and its prospects as the planet approaches a critical era, as global demand for fossil fuels begins to outstrip supply. World Oil Peak and the inevitable decline of fossil fuels are upon us now, some scientists and policy makers argue in this documentary.

The consequences of inaction in the face of this global crisis are enormous. What does Oil Peak mean for North America? As energy prices skyrocket in the coming years, how will the populations of suburbia react to the collapse of their dream? Are today's suburbs destined to become the slums of tomorrow? And what can be done NOW, individually and collectively, to avoid The End of Suburbia ?

Cane Toads: An Unnatural History (60 minutes)
A brilliantly witty and ironic documentary about a very serious subject: the effects of human interference in the environmental chain. Cane toads were brought to Australia in order to eat the indigenous pests that ruined local crops; unfortunately, they didn't manage to do that. The highly sexual creatures also reproduced without stop, and as the toads had no natural enemies there, they flourished. And flourished. Now they're overrunning the place, causing damage to everything, both man-made and natural -- and sometimes even endangering children and pets. So the frustrated residents are doing everything they can to get back at the toads, including squashing them with cars... at least those citizens who aren't erecting statues in honor of the animals.

Tonight's feature: Thirst
A Groundbreaking, New Documentary by Alan Snitow and Deborah Kaufman
Over a billion people lack access to safe drinking water. Each year, millions of children die of diseases caused by unsafe water. The numbers are increasing.

These facts drive a debate in the opening scenes of Thirst at the 2003 Third World Water Forum in Kyoto, Japan. Politicians, international bankers, and corporate executives gather to decide who will control global fresh water supplies. Their consensus for large dams and privatized, corporate water systems is challenged by experts and activists who assert that water is a human right, not a commodity to be traded on the open market.

Is water part of a shared "commons," a human right for all people? Or is it a commodity to be bought, sold, and traded in a global marketplace? Thirst tells the stories of communities in Bolivia, India, and the United States that are asking these fundamental questions.

Bonnie Paganis
General Manager, Foodservice and Special Events, Sodexho at the Shedd Aquarium
Bonnie Paganis has a knack for mixing her “greens.” Growing up in DuPage County, she was introduced to conservation early through her family’s farm and their involvement with wetland restoration. A self-described lifer in the food industry she has been with Sodexho (formerly Marriott) since 1983. In 1999 she took charge of Sodexho’s operation at the world-renowned aquarium, when Shedd was initiating its Right Bite sustainable seafood program. Bonnie’s strong conservation ethic helped Shedd expedite it’s Right Bite criteria in all areas of food service, including it’s catering menu. Since then she has expanded the menu to include many organic and local items and hosted events, which featured sustainable cuisine. Bonnie was instrumental in setting up the integrated waste management program at Shedd. Careful analysis of all packaging and the use of biodegradable materials where possible as well as reusing most dinnerware have reduced the amount of landfill waste. The program now in place redirects two-thirds of the foodservice’s waste to recycling and composting programs. A big part of the success of all of the programs is the training that Bonnie gives the staff as well as an effort to educate the guests.
