Not much, except when they are brought together and given a sustainability-spin at Chicago Green Drinks! Introducing the first-ever Green Drinks Green City Game Show! Join us for a raucous evening featuring 3 formerly well-respected contestants from the local sustainability community and, most importantly, you! Test your knowledge, play along at your seat, or take advantage of several audience participation moments! Bring your pre-Valentine date (or find one there!) for trivia, prizes and fun!

  • Michelle Jost is the Conservation Programs Manager at Shedd Aquarium. While many would assume this means donning a wetsuit to sweet-talk zooxantheallae back into bleaching coral, Michelle actually spends most of her time in meetings, on the phone, and emailing. Among her many green achievements, Michelle is most proud of her team -Vermiculture Club - winning Best Costume for Explorago 2006.
  • Kevin Pierce has been sustainable all his life, but he's been getting greener since he arrived in Chicago in 1986. He's an urbanist in architects' clothing, and is ready to arm-wrestle you for LEED credits. When he's not specifying geothermal heating systems, he enjoys playing guitar and building bat houses.
  • Payton Chung is our third contestant.

Panelists: Jean Pogge
Executive Vice President, ShoreBank
As Executive Vice President and Co-Director of the Funding and Operations Group, Pogge is responsible for a broad range of ShoreBank’s operations and finance as well as its national sales effort called Mission Based Deposits.

Prior to joining ShoreBank, Jean Pogge was President of Woodstock Institute, a nationally recognized nonprofit that works to promote community reinvestment through policy development, applied research, and interactive program design. Ms. Pogge received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Barat College and a Masters in Urban Planning from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Currently, Ms. Pogge is a board member and an Executive Committee member of the Social Venture Network and a board member of the Social Investment Forum. She also serves on the Board of Directors of Chicago United and on the Board of Directors and the Finance and Investment Committee of the Chicago Foundation for Women.

Greg Petersen
Operations Director, Planet Access Company
Greg is Search Developmental Center’s (Search) Director of Venture Development and Planet Access Company’s (PAC) Operations Director. PAC is a wholly owned subsidiary of Search. With Search he is responsible for managing all social enterprise activities, which are currently comprised entirely of PAC-related work. With PAC he is responsible for financial and operational planning as well as oversight of IT, sales, and customer service functions.

Greg’s experience includes 10 years of work in nonprofit and government finance, with a focus in the areas of budgeting, lending, and performance measurement.

Brian Mayhall
Owner and Founder, Employment Process Group
Brian Mayhall is the owner and founder of Employment Process Group. Brian is responsible for consulting with clients, developing, and overseeing human resources and employment process outsourcing, as well as recruiting system and process design and selection. Today, Brian is partnering with clients on executive search and outsourced recruiting assignments, across multiple industries. Brian’s work also includes evaluation of triple-bottom line benefits from human resource activities.

Brian has a Bachelor’s degree in Organizational Management from University of St. Francis and an MBA with a concentration in Human Resources from DePaul University. Brian is a certified Senior Professional of Human Resources (SPHR), an active member of the National Society for Human Resources Management, and involved in the local chapter (SHRP). Brian is also an Adjunct Faculty member at DePaul and Governor’s State Universities, teaching undergraduate and graduate level course in Human Resources, Recruitment, and Organizational Behavior.

Until 6 years ago, Jim Braun was a 5th generation farmer. He has served the boards of various farm organizations, political parties, as well as institutions and organizations of social concern. He has worked with both state and federal governments to promulgate rules and to draft legislation. In Illinois, he is co-founder of the Illinois Farmer-Consumer Coalition, which is an affiliation of social, economic, environmental, faith based, public health, and farm organizations. He is co-drafter of Illinois HB 1300, is working for enactment of local food provisions in the Federal Farm Bill, and is working with the Muslim community in Chicago to enhance an Illinois farmer-consumer Halal food network.

Irv & Shelly’s Fresh Picks, an organic delivery service in Chicago, works with a variety of local sustainable farms to bring healthy, fresh food to people’s homes all year-round. Irv started the business with his wife Shelly to build the infrastructure for a local food system and to rebuild the connection between Chicago and surrounding farms. He has been involved with nonprofit environmental activities for the past 10 years and currently holds Board Member positions with The Land Connection and Seven Generations Ahead.

Warren King
General Manager, Goodness Greeness
Goodness Greenness is the largest supplier of organic food in the Midwest Region. Its General Manager, Warren King, has twenty-five years of experience in agri-business that includes strategic planning, international business development, market analysis, consulting and sales. Warren has been involved with the local and sustainable food movement as a consultant and currently is a board member of Sustain and Seven Generations Ahead. He and his family continue to support local family farmers through their CSA membership. Warren’s passion for the land is rooted in his Northern California upbringing and his work on the farm as a young man. He possesses an MBA in Marketing from the Kellstadt School of Management at DePaul University and in 2000 was honored with the Illinois Alumni Recognition Award for his volunteer work and fund raising achievements for local 4-H.

As Director of Sustainability and Competitiveness, Ms. Wan manages the sustainability practice at the Chicago Manufacturing Center (CMC). Her primary responsibility in 2007 is to help launch the City of Chicago’s Waste to Profit Network as the program manager of this by-product synergy network for the Chicago region. Ms. Wan also continues to work with Natural Capitalism Solutions to develop CMC’s GreenPlants program, which helps manufacturers create a long term strategy for competitive growth through sustainable business practices. She is also the Chicago Manufacturing Extension Partnership contact for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sponsored Green Supplier’s Network that focuses on implementing lean and green manufacturing within the supply chains oflarge national corporations.

Travis Griggs
Wireless Recycling Program Director, Intercon Solutions
Intercon Solutions is an established recycling company with a zero-tolerance policy for landfilling assisting companies and individuals in disposing of e-waste in an environmentally responsible manner. Travis has been with Intercon since July 2006, where he works on new business development. Prior to joining Intercon, Travis owned and operated his own wireless communications business for five years selling Nextel and Dish Network products. Travis is a fifth generation farmer with an infant and a teenager that happily keep him and his wife busy in his off time.

Kathryn Lisinicchia
Program Developer, Recycling Services
Kathryn Lisinicchia has served as Program Developer for Recycling Services, Inc. for over seven years. Recycling Services is a paper and cardboard recycling company that has been operating in Chicago since 1984. In her capacity as Program Developer, Kathryn's primary work has been the design, implementation, and service of paper and cardboard recycling programs for commercial office buildings in downtown Chicago.

Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago
In November 2006 Debra was elected to the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, the premier wastewater treatment and stormwater management agency serving 5.3 million residents of Cook County. For more than 15 years Debra has been an active volunteer helping to clean up and restore the forest preserves along the North Branch of the Chicago River in Cook County. This work has taught her that the waters and woods are the real Discovery Zone in our region, essential for our quality of life, for cleaning our air and water, for recreation and contemplation. Debra was appointed to serve on President John Stroger’s Community Advisory Council on Land Management in 1997 and is a founding board member of Friends of the Forest Preserves. She also serves on the board of the Illinois Environmental Council and the Council for US Landcare Initiatives.

Melanie Napoleon
Director of Great Lakes Conservation Initiative
John G. Shedd Aquarium
Melanie Napoleon is director of Shedd Aquarium’s Great Lakes Conservation Initiative and has been at the aquarium since 2001. She was instrumental in starting Shedd’s Great Lakes outreach efforts, working closely with Great Lakes governmental agencies and nonprofits. Napoleon completed her undergraduate degree in environmental biology at Bradley University and her M.S. degree in biology at Northern Illinois University. She has knowledge of and experience in Great Lakes conservation and local ecology, informal education, community-based asset development and community-based social marketing.

Lisa Wojnarowski
Program Manager
Council of Great Lakes Governors
Lisa Wojnarowski coordinates the Governors’ and Premiers’ initiative that is developing regional water conservation and efficiency goals and objectives. Additionally, Lisa facilitates the Governors’ collaborative efforts to stop the spread and introduction of harmful, non-native species to the Great Lakes. At the Council, Lisa assisted in the negotiation of the Great Lakes—St. Lawrence River Basin Sustainable Water Resources Agreement and the companion interstate compact; historic agreements to cooperatively manage future water use in the Basin. Further, she managed the public participation process including two public comment periods on draft agreements. Lisa is currently earning a Juris Doctor degree at DePaul University College of Law in Chicago. She holds Bachelor degrees in Political Science and Communication from DePaul.

Lois Vitt Sale, Principal of Phoenix Architects is the Chair of the Greenbuild 2007 Host Committee. Her work includes consulting with the City of Chicago on various green initiatives, as well as designing several LEED certified buildings, including a zero-energy interpretative center, currently applying for LEED Platinum Certification. She also teaches a course on Sustainable Construction at Northwestern University. Mark Burger is a Principal at Kestrel Development Company, a firm providing consulting services on renewable energy policy and market development. Mr. Burger has more than 20 years of experience in renewable energy and building energy applications. Previously, he was a sales and marketing manager for Spire Solar, a firm manufacturing solar electric panels and designing systems. Prior to that, Mr. Burger worked for the US Department of Energy, last heading the Strategic Assistance Team for the Chicago Regional Office. He is also the President of the Illinois Solar Energy Association, a Life Member of the American Solar Energy Society and Midwest Renewable Energy Association, a member of the Governor's Advisory Council on Global Climate Change and the Illinois Wind Working Group and on the Board of Directors of the Illinois League of Conservation Voters. Barry is a Policy Advocate and ELPC’s Co-Legislative Director working on ELPC's Energy Project to develop renewable energy resources and implement the new rural clean energy development programs of the 2002 Federal Farm Bill. He previously worked as Policy Advisor to the Chairman of the Illinois Commerce Commission. He has also worked on several national and local political campaigns. Jay Marhoefer is the author of the forthcoming book "Re-Energizing America: A Common Sense Approach To Achieving U.S. Energy Independence In Our Generation," available July 2007. Jay's broad perspective for writing "Re-Energizing America" comes from a career that has spanned many disciplines: management consultant to the utility and petroleum sectors in ten years with Accenture and Price Waterhouse; strategic planner; enterprise systems project manager; IT executive; and lawyer. One episode of the 6-part DESIGN: e2 series, Green for All follows architect and activist Sergio Palleroni as he continues his mission to provide architectural and design solutions to regions in social and humanitarian crisis. This episode find him in east Austin, Texas and in Mexico, where he and his student team are helping threatened communities build thousands of homes while teaching residents to be resourceful in cutting costs and using local materials.

The New Heroes tells the dramatic stories of fourteen daring social entrepreneurs who are undaunted by the chronic challenges of poverty, illness, unemployment, violence and ignorange they seen in the world around them. With a revolutionary passion for transforming society, these individuals have the kind of vision that distinguish them from entrepreneurs in the business sector. We will screen at least one episode from this multi-part series narrated by Robert Redford, and produced by Oregon Public Broadcasting.

How and by how much does Chicago need to reduce its GHG (green house gas) emissions? What are the major local sources of GHG? What potential impacts will global warming have on the Chicago region? Peter Haas, Ph.D.
Manager - Geographic Research and Information Dept., Center for Neighborhood Technology
Dr. Haas is a physicist working on the technical aspects of environmental and social science. As director of the Geographical Research and Information Department at the Center for Neighborhood Technology (CNT), Peter developed CNT's GIS capability, creating maps and analysis for CNT's environmental, economic, and geographical work. His division is also responsible for CNT's web development, creating online tools and calculators, and developing community information systems. He has a Ph.D. in particle physics from the Ohio State University and is closely involved with the City of Chicago's climate change research initiative.

Karen Hobbs
First Deputy Commissioner, City of Chicago Department of Environment
Karen Hobbs is the First Deputy Commissioner for the City of Chicago Department of Environment, a position she's held since February, 2006. Karen oversees the day-to-day activities of the Department, including its brownfields, energy, natural resources, administrative and permitting and enforcement divisions. Prior to her appointment with the City, Karen served as the Research Director for a nonprofit organization, the Center for Neighborhood Technology. From 1996 to 2001, Karen was an appointee of the Clinton-Gore Administration, working on environmental and livability issues.

Katie McClain
Chicago City Director, Clinton Foundation
Katie McClain graduated from the University of Chicago's Harris School of Public Policy in 2004. For the past three years she was a Senior Policy Advisor working on Environmental Policy for the Lt. Governor of Illinois, Pat Quinn. While working for Quinn she managed the Illinois Green Government Coordinating Council, worked on passing environmental legislation, was an alternate on the Great Lakes Commission, and orgnized Environmental Symposiums throughout the State to educate and raise environmental awarness. In May of 2007, Ms. McClain began working for the William J. Clinton Foundation as the new Chicago City Director for the Clinton Climate Initiative. In this role she works closely with the City of Chicago to implement their Climate Change Agenda and help the city reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.

Victor Margolin is a founding editor and now co-editor of the academic design journal Design Issues. Professor Margolin has published widely on diverse design topics and lectured at conferences, universities, and art schools in many parts of the world. Books which he has written, edited, or co-edited include Propaganda: The Art of Persuasion, WW II; The Struggle for Utopia: Rodchenko, Lissitzky, Moholy-Nagy, 1917-1936; Design Discourse, Discovering Design and The Idea of Design, His most recent books are The Politics of the Artificial: Essays on Design and Design Studies; Culture is Everywhere: The Museum of Corn-temporary Art, and Healing the World: A Challenge to Designers (published as Archeworks Papers 1). He is currently working on a world history of design.

Heard about Global Warming, but still don't know how to trim the impact of your business? What options are available for reducing or offsetting your carbon emissions, short of installing a wind turbine on your roof?
Three local professionals will be discussing key issues and opportunities to consider for reducing your energy consumption, offset your remaining energy use, and identify other strategies to go ‘carbon neutral.’

Carbon Solutions Group
Thornton Schaff worked for a traditional derivatives trading firm for 3 years in Chicago before helping form Carbon Solutions Group, LLC in 2006. He assists customers in meeting their environmental stewardship goals by procuring Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) and Verified Emissions Reductions (VERs) for their businesses day to day operations. Currently in the role of Business Development, he is working to expand CSG's business practices to include carbon project development. He majored in Finance and Real Estate at DePaul University.

Lesley McCain
Community Energy
Lesley McCain, Midwest Director of Business Development, joined the Community Energy Inc. team in June, 2005, as Residential Program Manager for the award winning City of Naperville’s Renewable Energy Program. In January of 2006, she added corporate and industrial sales to her residential program responsibilities. Lesley has a BA from Northern Illinois University in Communication Studies. Community Energy was awarded the 2006 EPA/DOE Renewable Energy Supplier of the Year.

Glenn Hunter
Ecological Products
Glenn Hunter has been working in the energy field since 1980 when he installed his first solar thermal system. His background selling alcohol stills in the 80's and whole building automation systems in the 90's positioned him for his current role as an energy broker for small to midsized businesses, universities and school and park Districts. He currently represents Constellation - Newenergy, MidAmerican Energy, PEPCO and Suez Energy Resources in IL for electricity and natural gas purchases. He's in the process of developing green energy marketing, wind energy promotion and renewable energy credit's for corporations, including carbon offsets.

How does a long-time environmentally-sensitive manufacturer stay above the fray and keep their product differentiated from a plethora of challengers who may (or may not) tout similar benefits? Claudia Regojo joined Greenmaker in October 2006, having previously served as Director of the North Park Village Nature Center. She holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing and international business (Florida State University) and a master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning (University of Iowa), specifically focused on Environmental Planning and Economic Development. During gradute school, Claudia produced a documentary on green building and the creation of the first sustainable development course at the University of Iowa.

Brian Leber
President, Leber Jeweler Inc.
Brian Leber is president of Leber Jeweler Inc. and an advocate for a range of human rights and environmental issues. Working with a broad coalition, he is a strong voice for reform within the gem and jewelry trade while focusing on constructive and sustainable development of gem and mineral resources throughout the world. Founder of the Jewelers’ Burma Relief Project (JBRP), he is also a member of the Council for Responsible Jewellery Practices (CRJP), and an active participant in the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA). This program establishes a voluntary system to independently verify compliance with environmental, human rights and social standards for mining operations. Brian is an active lecturer and writer on topics relating to corporate responsibility and business ethics.

Margaret O’Dell is Senior Program Officer for Environment for the Joyce Foundation, a $900 million foundation based in Chicago, whose mission is to improve the quality of life of residents of the Upper Midwest. The Foundation has a longstanding commitment to the health of the Great Lakes. Margaret grew up on Lake Superior and has degrees from Carleton College and the University of Chicago. She is a past chair of the Environmental Grantmakers Association and currently serves on the Steering Committee of the Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems Funders, and is a member of the board of the Surface Transportation Policy Project.
