Cookies sustain me. I’m eating one now, at the end of another long day, mustering the energy to finish this paragraph. Not even a quarter of the way into my 6-week teaching stint and I’m exhausted. These are just the warm-up pains, it will get easier, I tell myself, knowing it won’t. I’ll just get more used to it. I wish you could meet these high schoolers who’ve come from around the country to develop their leadership skills and deepen their sustainability knowledge. Their enthusiasm and potential motivates me to be my best. It's the reason I am so tired. Like great clients, we bring out the best in each other, although I am perhaps more aware of this equation than they are. Admittedly, there can be lots of bumps along the way. For the next 5.5 weeks, however, I’m committed to navigating any turbulence. Thankfully, this small Ohio town doesn’t lack for sweets. That said, the lemon bars only help keep me going in the evenings when there is still more work to do. Otherwise, the investment in the students and future generates its own momentum, inflecting me in the process.
