Toward Gladness and Delight?

Peter Nicholson

All of the Lights
I’m not typically sentimental. The holidays don’t so much invoke a sense of nostalgia, as a longing for a brighter future. These are challenging times for the types of complex, intersectional issues upon which Foresight focuses. Headway is rarely the result of a simple, linear trajectory. Achievements need to be well-implemented, and often defended, after being secured. The rise of fierce, irrational opposition can sometimes be a sign that momentum for change has become a threat to the status quo. Progress and retreat are not necessarily polar opposites, but rather tangle with each other like warring animals that can’t ever completely let the other go. None of which reduces the challenges, or the imperative to keep pressing ahead. Hope is fundamental to this season for me. I experience it in all the lights, music, and gifts, and fruitlessly try to stockpile it for the coming year. However inundated by these hectic weeks, they never seem enough to fill my reserves. True to the name of the organization for which I work, I’m less interested in recalling a romanticized past, although that certainly informs the present, than in looking ahead and reveling in a compelling vision of what might be, and how we might get closer to it by this time next year. In that, for me, is joy.
