INSIGHT: The Kindness of Strangers?

Peter Nicholson

The Implications of Principles
Fundamentals matter. Recently, I’ve been considering the many gradations of progress, violence, trust and risk. Some manifestations are so subtle or common that I’ve failed to recognize them, either within myself or externally. Generosity is required. As much a personal discipline as specific act, this capacity can be expanded through practice, or never exercised at all. It runs deeper and broader than kindness. So much of what Foresight pursues relies on others stepping out of immediate self-interest, whether to contribute time and perspective to larger objectives, or financially support a student they will likely never meet. Trust is the currency upon which generosity relies. There is freedom within it. Its erosion, on levels both personal and professional, creates a vacuum into which fear- and anger-mongering demagogues rush. The contract I have is foremost with myself, its terms simple and profound: grow, make better, constructively exercise the privilege with which I have been endowed due to no efforts of my own. Awareness is an important step toward enlightenment which, I think, has as much to do with how I think as act. In that, I, and this country, are a long way from home.
