Reconsidered?

Resilience & Verve
I’m too comfortable. The climate/carbon diagrams are not trending in our favor. “Bigger, better, faster” change will be required to check their precipitous upward arcs. “Earth Day” is a woefully inadequate observation to address what environmentalist David Orr calls our “long emergency.” None of this is new. In light of the current national political context, I’ve been pondering what my organization should do. Teaching and empowering smart, engaged future leaders through Foresight’s summer sustainability high school program is one of the answers. Investing in forging diverse future change-making leadership is imperative to ebbing the curves. Most of the more than 150 applications we’ve received are outstanding. More than 120 of them require some level of need-based scholarships to participate. My dedication to fostering greater inclusivity requires fundraising, an activity I don’t always enjoy. But doing so is worth it. I didn’t enter this field to be placated, but rather to embrace and act upon meaningful discontent. "Earth Day” is too singular and tame. There should be loud fireworks, not of celebration, but to rattle us from our placated stasis into investing in a more vibrant and durable future the other 364 days of the year.
