How to Respond?

Peter Nicholson

Considering My Place
The light got weird. Like some sort of cosmic score, a solar eclipse “at totality" transcends words. Yet for me, the bizarre, light-dark quality of illumination before and after the two-minute period of full coverage almost overshadowed the main event. Afterward, I found my motivation to do just about anything else zapped. Thrust in the stark presence of that much greater than myself, I’m forced to acknowledge my inconsequentiality. Working on tangible, here-and-now topics like energy, waste and resource conservation, it’s easy to get lulled into a inflated sense of impact. I wasn’t prepared for the post-eclipse lethargy, but also knew that it was a dangerous impulse to indulge. Conjuring some ancient inner discipline, I’ve sat myself in this chair, opened the laptop, and begun to reconnect one word, gesture, sentence at a time. There is a profound wonder to the simple possible impossibility of me being here, able to intersect and experience phenomena whose scale so dramatically dwarf my own, whether orbiting planetary bodies, or mountains shifting on geologic timeframes. By some miraculous, long-ago, evolutionary twist, I’m able to choose how to respond.
