The Reorganization of Intent
I'm constantly on edge. It’s a subtle anxiety. Foresight has navigated many challenges in its 15 years of existence. We’re as effective and empowered an entity as we’ve ever been. I’m not cocky enough, however, to take success for granted. Every new undertaking (and we’ve had several lately) is a fresh challenge requiring a balance between ego and humility. When that dynamic gets skewed one way or another, the organization will be in trouble. Maintaining it, particularly when working at the forefront of several complex issues, and in the context of a bizarre political reality, requires fortitude. It requires conjuring what I can only describe as some kind of new mental space that can tolerate increasing ambiguity and uncertainty. I feel as if I’m staking a claim in some emergent territory situated between the poles of victory and defeat, in which progress can nevertheless be vigorously pursued. My goal is no longer to assuage my murmuring concerns—they continue to resist such efforts—but rather to incorporate them into a psychological infrastructure from which fecundity might boldly emerge.
