After the Flood?

Peter Nicholson

In Memoriam: Henry Henderson (1952 - Nov. 5, 2018)
Nature wins. The other morning, in my vivid dreamscape, the waves had far exceeded the breakwater. I call to you, “come look,” not so much out of surprise or concern, but wonder. With the waves now lapping at it, will the foundation hold? Is it built for this? The dream is infused with as much profound feeling as vivid image. The sentiment surfaces with me as as I awake, like an artifact accompanying me to the surface. What? The questions stick without further explication…was that about? do I do? It lodges, unadorned, unwilling to be modified, explained, dismissed. Each loss multiplies the weight, the profundity. I didn’t think the water could possibly get that close. It resists categorization, but is multifaceted: anxiety, concern, mortality, power, and awe. The absence generates its own unique gravity. In some cases I stroll the periphery, in others my intimacy draws me closer to the core. My obligation isn’t to them, but rather to myself, to aspire against the waves, to meet their lap, test my resolve, ambition, to rise not because they are still here, but rather because they are not. Nature always wins.
