Toward What Do We Aspire?

Peter Nicholson

The Root of the Matter
I value clarity. Genetically indisposed to muddle, becoming a designer made sense. Helping clients untangle complex issues is a significant portion of the value that Foresight provides to its clients. Which isn’t to say that we simplify matters. Rather, through the process of externalizing elements and their relationships, perspective is gained, from which purpose and direction can be defined, and progress realized. I can tolerate a lot of ambiguity, as is often required in our work, if I have confidence in the process and direction. There is a distinction between clarity and order; my need for the former is so easily confused with a desire for the latter. Seeing a cluttered presentation slide overloaded with information recently evoked in me an outsized response. While its individual components were neatly arranged, its message was extremely unclear. I had to consciously contain myself, as if personally offended that this could be suggested as contributing to, and not hindering, progress. The ability of others to endure poor design astonishes me, if only because I can’t. Traditional Japanese gardens embody the epitome of what I yearn for: never overly ordered, but always planted and tended in such a way as to be clear, blissful in whatever season.
