Foresight Design Initiative prides itself on its staff of specialist-generalists, a term for individuals who have a sufficient depth of knowledge in a broad range of fields. The inherently systemic and multidisciplinary nature of sustainability challenges creates a special demand for professionals able to assimilate large amounts of information in order to follow and stay ahead of diverse industry trends.

David Garcia, Senior Consultant
David is a multidisciplined practitioner of communications strategy, project management, and visual art and design. His highly productive, well-organized, creative approach to problem solving is informed by experience gained doing marketing for a multinational professional services firm, owning a commercial photography business, and a previous stint on the Foresight team. He specializes in taking unruly, complicated situations—be they vague project goals in need of fleshing out, strategies in need of execution, or visions in need of clearer expression—through to fruition with a steady hand and level head. In his previous time at Foresight David ran the programming and marketing of the long-running Green Drinks series, and developed and managed highly successful large-scale projects such as Mayor Daley’s Greenworks Awards. David received his undergraduate degree from the Columbus College of Art and Design, and recently completed a Master of Art in the Conservation of Easel Paintings at Northumbria University in the United Kingdom.

Tim Jones-Yelvington, Senior Consultant
Tim possesses a range of research, communications, and program development and assessment skills. He worked for five years as program staff at Crossroads Fund, a public foundation supporting grassroots organizations in the Chicago area. His position included managing a portfolio of grantees and helping to coordinate a community-led grantmaking process. He worked closely with the staff and leaders of new and emerging organizations to navigate their organizational growth, and also contributed to Crossroads Fund's own fundraising and communications efforts. While at the foundation, Tim developed a tool to evaluate grantees' impact. This project required synthesizing feedback from diverse stakeholders, including grantee organizations, philanthropic colleagues, board members, and evaluation professionals. Through his involvement in the philanthropic sector, Tim has experienced multiple funder-grantee collaborations, acquiring knowledge of best practices. Tim received his undergraduate degree from DePaul University and recently completed a Masters of Education in Youth Development at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Peter Nicholson, Founding Principal
Peter leads a multifaceted career focused on the innovative pursuit of greater social, environmental, and economic sustainability. Drawing upon broad professional experience and a diverse skill set, he consults on and undertakes forward-looking projects for a diversity of clients, including government agencies, institutional nonprofits, and diverse businesses. Considered a highly adept facilitator and teacher, he has moderated numerous conferences, workings groups, and events, as well as developed and led dynamic, sustainability-focused education programs. Prior to establishing Foresight in 2002, he held positions in the corporate and non-profit sectors. In each, he has consistently pursued growth and innovation. Peter began his study of Sustainability and Design as a graduate student at the Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology, and holds a bachelors degree from the Oberlin College and Conservatory of Music.

Peter Toth, Senior Consultant
Peter brings a multidisciplinary perspective to his work at Foresight, which includes primary and secondary research, event design, communications, and project management. He is knowledgeable in a range of sustainability topics, including clean energy, regional resilience, stormwater management, and transportation. While at Foresight, Peter has worked on projects with a diverse array of partners, from foundations like the Chicago Community Trust to public agencies like the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning. Previously, he helped to develop a regional transit-oriented development plan at the Center for Neighborhood Technology. Peter graduated from Northwestern University with a B.A. in History of the Americas and a minor in Chemistry.

Lyndon Valicenti, Principal
Lyndon brings over 10 years of experience in scientific study, policy analysis, and planning around sustainable ecological and urban systems. She has conducted scientific research on vulnerable ecosystems in the Arctic and Antarctic; contributed to debates on international climate change policy; developed and implemented programs to support city-scale climate action; and has informed ecological thinking in urban planning across China and the Middle East. Lyndon has a solid record of leading thoughtful, science-based planning, policy making, and research, as well as convening coalitions to advance strategic agendas. Lyndon is Adjunct Faculty of Sustainability Leadership and Change Management at University of Chicago’s Graham School of Continuing Liberal and Professional Studies. She holds a Masters in Public Administration in Environmental Science and Policy from Columbia University and a Bachelors of Science in Aquatic Ecology from University of California, Santa Barbara. She also holds a certificate in Sustainable Urban and Environmental Design from Archeworks.

Paola Aguirre, Founder, Borderless
Borderless is a Chicago-based urban design and research studio/workshop focused on cultivating collaborative design agency through interdisciplinary projects. With emphasis on exchange and communication across disciplines, Borderless explores creative city design and civic engagement proposals that address the complexity of urban systems and social equity by looking at intersections between architecture, urban design, infrastructure, landscape, planning and civic participatory processes. Paola is also an active educator, and currently teaches architecture at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and has taught urban design at the Sam Fox School of Design at Washington University in St. Louis and social impact design at Archeworks.

Mo Sook Park, Founder, I-D Leadership Consulting
Mo brings with her over 12 years of experience bringing transformational leadership and organization development opportunities to increase the impact of mission driven organizations. In her practice, Park has worked with clients across sectors including Chicago Public Schools and multiple Chicago based startups to help address some of their most complex challenges. Using the lens of leadership, organizational behavior, systems, and group dynamics, Park has a track record of working intimately with her clients to build the capacity of the people at all levels of an organization to adapt and implement organizational change initiatives from start to finish. Park is a certified Immunity-to-Change Facilitator from Minds at Work, a Case-in-Point Facilitator from the Kansas Leadership Center, and a consultant candidate with the AK Rice Institute for the Study of Social Systems. Park received her undergraduate degree from Harvard University, and a M.Ed. in Leadership Development Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

The Foresight Design Initiative’s Board of Directors contribute their diverse perspectives, representing a variety of ages, genders, ethnicities and professional backgrounds, to help propel and ensure the success of the organization. Engaged with providing programmatic, strategic and financial oversight, their expertise are drawn upon on a regular basis during and in between regularly scheduled board meetings.

Carlos Aldaco
Student, National Louis University
Alumnus, Foresight Prep @ Oberlin College program 2016 & 2017

Carlos is an undocumented student attending National Louis University majoring in psychology. He wants to use the psychology route towards receiving a degree in nursing. Carlos is a strong student with a clear hunger for understanding the subject that is being taught. He is engaged asking questions when he does not fully grasp a concept or mechanism, because he never settles for ignorance. Instead, he asks probing questions that will help his process while also encouraging others around him to do the same. Carlos continually demonstrates the highest level of achievement in his studies and voices his opinions in an impressive demonstration of persuasion and voice. He brings humor as well as humility in all that he does, showcasing his wide range of skills across academic content. Carlos’ skillset is varied, versatile, and deep, providing him with the necessary tools to excel.

Dr. Sarita Bhakuni
Owner and Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Sarita Bhakuni
LEAD Facilitator, University of Chicago Booth School of Business

Sarita is the owner and manager of her private consulting firm, specializing in understanding the patient experience at hospitals, working with engineers and MBA students in building emotional intelligence, and helping companies from startups to global corporations manage organizational change during growth and development periods. For over twenty years, Sarita has worked with people at all levels of organizations as an assessment expert to evaluate, develop, and select leaders; create synergy on teams; implement strategic growth initiatives; create diversity empowerment programs; and provide coaching to executives. Her focus is to work with clients to achieve insight around their potential to grow and change.  

Sarita holds a Psy.D in Clinical Psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology in Chicago and a B.S. from Ohio State University. In addition to her consulting firm, she also has a private clinical practices where she works with adults and couples.

Hoyt Hudson
President, Mainstay Energy

Hoyt is the President for Mainstay Energy, a renewables and environment company that provides guidance on project development, due diligence, business plan creation, and navigation of government incentives. As a clean-tech development and finance expert focusing on medium-to-industrial scale energy projects, Hoyt brings over 20 years of experience in entrepreneurship and business growth.

As serial entrepreneur, prior to Mainstay Energy, Hoyt founded InterAccess in 1993 and grew it into one of the most successful Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and Data CLECs in the Midwest, earning a spot in the Inc. 500 for 1999. Additionally, he has conducted development and project management work for a portfolio of multi-billion dollar gasification facilities, and has consulted with investment firms and Fortune 500 companies regarding energy technologies, business plan assessments, and development studies.  Hoyt holds a B.S. in Applied Physics from the California Institute of Technology and is a frequent conference speaker and panelist, as well as a regular contributor to industry publications.

Lindsay James
Experienced Sustainability Strategy Leader
Former Vice President of Restorative Enterprise

Lindsay is an expert in the field of sustainability, specifically biomimicry and biophilic design. She has a wealth of experience in corporate sustainability practices, including her tenure as Vice President of Restorative Enterprise for Interface, the global sustainability leader and the world's largest manufacturer of commercial carpet tile (NASDAQ: TILE). She served as the leader for Interface’s Americas sustainability strategy. Lindsay is an experienced biomimicry expert, working to integrate biomimicry into companies’ sustainability practices and discover a path for business to become restorative. 

Lindsay is a graduate of the University of North Carolina, with an MBA in Sustainable Enterprise from the Kenan-Flagler Business School. She recently earned her MS in Biomimicry from Arizona State University. She attended UNC-Chapel Hill for her undergraduate degree, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BA in both Economics and Biology. Lindsay’s professional experience includes economic consulting with Analysis Group and environmental economics research with RTI International.

David Leopold
Director of Product Management, City Tech Collaborative, UI LABS

In his role at City Tech Collaborative, David facilitates cross-sector collaboration among universities, government, and industry to drive innovative solutions to complex urban challenges. Prior to joining UI LABS in 2015, David was Program Manager for the Chicago Department of Transportation Streetscape and Sustainable Design Program, where he directed nearly $100 million of policy, planning, and construction projects ranging from pocket parks and public markets to streetscapes and master plans.

David has a bachelor’s degree in operations and strategic management from Boston College and a master’s in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Michigan. He is a former lecturer at the University of Illinois, Chicago and currently serves on the board of Foresight Design, a nonprofit that provides education and community building for sustainable transformation in the Midwest.

Susanne Schnell
Visiting Scholar, Loyola University Center for Urban Research and Learning (CURL)

Susanne has a diverse background developing multi-stakeholder social impact initiatives with a broad focus on the built environment, social equity, and community health. In addition to working as an independent strategy consultant, she is currently the project director of an 'aging in place' research and practice initiative at Loyola University Chicago that engages multicultural older adults and local stakeholders in the design of culturally informed health-related services and programs. Susanne has previously served as the executive director of Archeworks, a Chicago-based public interest design learning center that addresses that needs of nonprofit, healthcare, and public sector partners. Design partnerships generated innovative, human-centered proposals, tools, and prototypes for accessible urban placemaking, vacant land use, and local food system development in high need communities. She previously held lead strategic planning and program development positions in the economic development, academic, and civic sectors, including roles with the Civic Committee, Civic Consulting Alliance, and City Design Center at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Susanne holds a Bachelor's degree from Smith College and a Master's degree from the University of Michigan.

Gabe Stevens

Gabe is a member of the Class of 2021 at DePaul University. He is a competitive skateboarder and wrestler, and his academic interests include history and psychology. As an alumnus of the Summer 2015 Foresight Prep @ Oberlin: Future of Essential Resources seminar, he completed the program with a newfound passion for green architecture and ensuring community/stakeholder involvement in sustainability-related planning and efforts.

Lanita Stevens
Product Stewardship & Sustainability Manager, USG Corporation   

Lanita is the Manager of Product Stewardship and Sustainability for USG Corporation, North’s America’s leading producer and distributor of products for the construction and remodeling industries. In her current role, Lanita is responsible for managing sustainable product certification initiatives, including Life Cycle Assessments and Environmental Product Declaration development.

Lanita holds a M.S. in Environmental Management from the Illinois Institute of Technology and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from California State University. Additionally, Lanita is a member of several professional groups, such as the National Association for Environmental Management (NAEM), Air & Waste Management Association, International Society of Sustainability Professionals, and the ASTM E.60 Committee on Sustainability.

Matthew Walker
Principal, S2G Ventures   

As a Principal at S2G Ventures, Matt's efforts are focused on sourcing and evaluation of potential investment opportunities, and contribution to business development efforts of portfolio companies. Before joining S2G Ventures, Matt was an investment banking Associate at Perella Weinberg Partners in New York focused on M&A and restructuring transactions across a range of industries. Prior to that role, he was a securities attorney in the Funds, Regulation, and Equity Derivatives practice at Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft, LLP in New York. Matt has an MBA from The University of Chicago Booth School of Business, a J.D. from New York University School of Law, and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan.

Rebekah Levin (2018)
Rebekah is the Director of Evaluation and Learning for the Robert R. McCormick Foundation, guiding the Foundation in evaluating the impact of its philanthropic giving and its involvement in community issues. She is working both with the Foundation’s grantmaking programs, and also with the parks, gardens, and museums at Cantigny Park. Rebekah joined the Foundation from the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she was Research Associate Professor in the College of Education, designing and implementing evaluations for foundations and nonprofits and teaching evaluation and research methods. Prior to UIC, Rebekah was with the Center for Impact Research in Chicago for 10 years, serving as its Executive Director from 2001 to 2006. Rebekah earned her MA and Ph.D. in Social Service Administration from the University of Chicago. Her bachelor’s degree is from Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio.

Susanne Schnell (2016-17)
Susanne is an entrepreneurial leader whose work supports sustainable urban development, community health, and social innovation. She is currently a visiting scholar at Loyola University's Center for Urban Research and Learning (CURL), where her work focuses on building community capacity and healthy urban environments for connected, equitable aging. From 2009-2013, she served as Executive Director of Archeworks—a Chicago-based public interest design center dedicated to improving the physical, social, and environmental health and vitality of underserved communities through multidisciplinary design partnerships.

Jonathan Boyer (2015-16)
Jonathan has been practicing architecture in Chicago since 1974 and is currently a Principal at Farr Associates, a sustainable architecture and urban planning studio. His practice has focused on integrating environmentally sustainable elements into healthy and aesthetically compelling living spaces.
